More about the ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® Platform

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a well-established procedure for the non-invasive treatment of many brain tumors including brain metastases, meningiomas, and acoustic neuromas, as well as other intracranial disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia and arteriovenous malformations. Considered an alternative to surgery for these indications, SRS is an outpatient procedure that often provides equivalent or superior outcomes, yet requires no surgical incision, and little to no patient recovery period.

Each year more than two million patients worldwide are potential candidates for SRS, yet due to the significant costs and complexities of historical delivery technologies, only an estimated 200,000 patients currently receive such treatment. U.S. FDA-cleared in 2017, ZAP Surgical’s ZAPX ® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® platform was designed to solve this challenge, and ultimately bring world-class SRS to more patients in more places.

No Vault. ZAP-X is recognized for being the first and only vault-free SRS delivery system, thus eliminating the need for providers to build costly shielded radiation treatment rooms.

No Cobalt. Utilizing a modern linear accelerator to produce radiation, ZAP-X is also the first and only dedicated radiosurgery system to no longer require Cobalt-60 radioactive sources, thereby eliminating the significant costs to license, secure and regularly replace live radioactive isotopes.

No Compromises. Built on a distinctive dual-gimbaled gantry design, the ZAP-X system uses gyroscopic mobility to direct radiosurgical beams from hundreds of unique angles over an unprecedented large spherical workspace to precisely concentrate radiation on the tumor target. This pioneering approach supports the clinical objective of protecting healthy brain tissue and patient neuro-cognitive function, as well as preserving potential future SRS retreatments. Meticulously designed with a low scatter beam energy, a low penumbra source-axis distance, and ultra-low collimation leakage, ZAP-X was purpose-built to set new standards in radiosurgery.

The ZAP-X platform was invented by Dr. John R. Adler, Emeritus Dorothy & TK Chan Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology at Stanford University. Dr. Adler is also the inventor of the CyberKnife® robotic radiosurgery system and founder of Accuray, Inc.

The ZAP-X platform integrated within a mobile platform is pending further validation.
